"I would teach children physics, music and philosophy, but most importantly music, for in the pattern of music and all the arts are the keys to learn." - Plato

Music
Together began in Princeton, New Jersey as an educational
project of the Center for Music and Young Children (CMYC)
and is now taught nationwide. The Music Together approach
develops every child's birthright of basic music competence
by encouraging the actual experiencing of music rather than
the learning of concepts about music. Families learn to be
makers of music, rather than consumers of music. Six to twelve
children (birth to five and four to seven years) and their
parents or caregivers meet weekly for 45 minutes to experience
new songs, chants, movement activities, and instrumental jam
sessions. Both children and adults participate equally in
the class, which is led by a qualified teacher with both early
childhood and music education experience. The weekly class
is just a jumping off point for the family music-making that
occurs throughout the week at home, thanks to the professional
recordings and home materials provided to each family in the
program.

Basic Principles of the Music Together Philosophy
I. All children are musical.
II. Therefore, all children can achieve basic music competence, which we have defined as the ability to sing in tune and move with accurate rhythm.
III.The participation and modeling of parents and caregivers, regardless of their musical ability, is essential to a child's musical growth.
IV. This growth is best achieved in a playful, developmentally appropriate, non-performance-oriented learning environment that is musically rich yet immediately accessible to the child's-and the adult's!-participation.
Each
session is 10-12 weeks long and lasts for 45 minutes each
week.
We
utilize informal, not formal education! We provide experiences,
not concepts. We "show"—not "tell" (actions,
not instructions). We provide an anxiety-free learning process
for the children (not performance-oriented). We model everything—singing,
dancing, playing instruments, being silly—everything! We
provide an environment that is full of interesting tonalities
and meters (not just “kiddy” songs). We utilize repetition
because repetition is how children learn. Repetition is
how children learn. Repetition is how children learn!

One might ask what makes Music Together different from the other Early Childhood Music classes being offered in our area. Unlike many other classes, Music Together classes are for the entire family. Moms, Dads, siblings, grandparents, and special friends are all invited to attend the class together. No need to put your one year old and your three year old in two different classes!
Music Together provides experiences with unusual meters and tonalities—the class is not “watered down” to include only familiar nursery songs. Music Together is a musical development class, not a child development class taught through music.
Finally, Music Together provides an absolutely anxiety-free learning process for the families in attendance. All levels of ability and participation are embraced and celebrated within the class!
